Acknowledgement of Country

Orchestra Victoria acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land on which we work, the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and Boon Wurrung people of the Eastern Kulin Nations. We pay our respects to their Elders past and present, and to all First Nations people across Australia, whose traditions of music making and storytelling have continued on this land for millenia.

Welcome to Rhapsody in Blue at 100: A Celebration of Orchestral Jazz

As musicians, collaboration is at the heart of sharing the stage; the way an orchestra breathes every phrase in unison, a rhythm section syncs their groove, and singers draw the audience in with their lyrics. Tonight, we elevate this spirit of collaboration even further, offering a remarkable musical journey that combines and celebrates the exceptional talent on stage from across genres. We feature Australia’s premier exponents of Brazilian jazz, Panorama Brasil, alongside the masterful Grammy-nominated pianist Makoto Ozone and his trio, all complemented by the outstanding Orchestra Victoria. Together, we are creating something truly special.

We begin with a suite of Antônio Carlos Jobim arrangements orchestrated especially for tonight for Panorama Brasil and Orchestra Victoria by the wonderful Alastair McGrath-Kerr and Matt Boden. The second half takes us on a journey from Spain to New York, as we welcome Makoto Ozone for two monumental works: Chick Corea's Spain for Sextet and Orchestra, and George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. The incredible energy and spirit of these pieces are infectious, capturing the essence of jazz improvisation while showcasing the power of orchestral music. They exemplify the vibrant dialogue between jazz and classical genres, highlighting the creativity and artistry that emerge when these worlds intersect.

I invite you to sit back, relax, and enjoy this extraordinary fusion of sounds as we present Rhapsody in Blue at 100: A Celebration of Orchestral Jazz for the Melbourne International Jazz Festival.

In the upcoming season, we celebrate this unique capacity through a range of partnerships, but most proudly with our Southbank Series and new initiative, Meet @ the Market, programs that place our musicians front and centre. Here, our tradition charts a new course with a diverse concert repertoire, exploring stories both timeless and contemporary, and featuring works beyond our core opera and ballet repertoire.

Season 2025 celebrates all that we bring to the Victorian landscape, underscoring our role in enriching cultural experiences for audiences across our state.
