About Matt
Brisbane-born violinist Matt Hassall began violin, piano and trombone lessons at primary school, going on to play with the Queensland Youth Orchestra. He studied with Patricia Pollett at the University of Queensland, graduating with a Bachelor of Music degree with performance honours, followed by a Bachelor of Education. After joining Orchestra Victoria (then the State Orchestra of Victoria) in 1992, he continued private studies with Nathan Gutmann in Melbourne. Matt has performed across Australia with the Queensland, Melbourne, and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras, the Queensland Philharmonic, and Queensland Pops, and overseas with the St Gallen Symphony Orchestra, Luzern Symphony Orchestra, the 21st Century Orchestra in Switzerland, and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. Matt is also experienced in musical theatre, appearing many times as Concertmaster with The Production Company, as well as for the national tour of West Side Story in 2010, the Melbourne season of Les Misérables in 2014, and Ladies In Black with the Melbourne Theatre Company. His advice to aspiring musicians is simple: “It’s not all about you”.
Matthew Hassall's Tutti Violin position is generously supported by Mr Russell and Dr Jenni Jenkins.
