About Matthew
Double bass player Matthew Thorne was born in Canberra, where he attended the Canberra School of Music; he has been with Orchestra Victoria since 1998. He has played with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, as well as too many rock and jazz bands to mention! He has also been part of the orchestra for the musicals Phantom of the Opera, Aspects of Love and Love Never Dies. One of his favourite experiences was playing Jerry’s Girls for The Production Company – it was his 40th show with them and a great mix of classical, jazz and rock. He is inspired by master jazz composer, trumpet player and band leader Don Ellis, and George Mraz, his favourite player in the jazz idiom. He plays a gorgeous instrument that was made for him by English craftsman Ron Prentice in 1986
